self leveling vs non self leveling spring?

What is the difference? Common sense says the self leveling unit is shorter. Someone is selling M5 touring springs with regular touring shocks saying it'll work on my non sls 530i touring. Doesn't sound right to me, can someone chime in?

self levelling springs are softer, as they are supported by the LAD system (bomb).
