93 525i LCD module failure?

Hello all - my 93 525i automatic has developed an intermittent problem - all the LCDs at the bottom of the dash go into what I refer to as 'Vegas mode' - they all flash random, erratic characters, very rapidly. This effects the odometer, check control section, and gear selector display. It happens more than half the time. Sometimes happens while driving, sometimes happens from start. Car runs fine, no faults on the Peake tool. Could this be caused by a loose connection, or is my module shot?

If you remove the module from the cluster and reclamp the metal frame that retains the glass LCD display it will work again. Tough to explain unless it's in front of you. All this doe sis restore the connection to the LCD panel.
If you press on the face of the cluster does it effect it? If so for sure the connection has failed.
