Touring rear window hatch strut hell..

I´m in the process of changing the struts in my rear window hatch, reattaching the struts to the points inside the body was the easiest part, but getting the circlips on where the strut is attached to the window itself is driving me mad.. They keep deforming and eventually break off again after like 3-4 openings and closing the window! :(

Any pointers?

Is is straight forward to change the struts, do you just remove the grommet to access the body attachment (inside the car)??
