ewww this is the wiring connector to my front and fog lights... it's uglier in person...
the questions are -if i cut the connectors will the wiring be colour-coded already for me? and is there anything running through this other than lights? (ie can i leave the battery connected?)

The wires are color coded. It sounds like you are going to replace the connector but you can also try to clean it using electrical cleaner or some ethyl alcohol. Even brake cleaner will clean that stuff up. As long as the copper is shinny and clean, it should be OK.
And that the connector securely locks is important too.

thanks - one of the pins broke off inside the female end :(
i was going to replace the plug but i don't have a plug to do it with :(
so.. what kind of voltage runs through wires like this? can i use a computer power supply plug? - i have some of those...
That connector is junk. If by some miracle you manage to clean it up enough to restore function it will rot more in a New York minute.
The wires are color coded, just splice them together and don't worry about a connector.

aww ... i really should do it all at the same time but i don't have all the stuff... i'm going to have to take it off again twice more to do the fogs again and also the headlight washers... check out this 'fix' (it leaks) by a po! thanks for the tip ross but what do you say will any plug do temporarily?

Nice,
I did something very similar with a fuel pump sending unit. Its a bit of a bugger getting them all connected, but it works!
