View Full Version : What's the best red colour?

I'm in the middle of prepping my car for a respray, just fitted new front wings, M-tec side skirts & rear spoiler & repairing all the little dings & scratches that's been collected over the last 18 years. I want to keep my car red (though Daytona violet is sooo tempting lol!), but can't decide which hue to use. At the minute it's brilliantrot (erm pink:p). Is there any 'preferred' red to use? It need not be a BMW colour, I'm open to all suggestions! Also what is the silver colour that some M kitted cars have on their side skirts?
Many thanks,
Shaun M

That's not the M-Tech body kit... the 95 models had painted lowers.

The lighter red M5's (like brilliant red) used Diamond Black metallic (181) as their contrast color on the skirting.
Not sure what color the Calypso cars had.
The silvers are Sebring Grey metallic (229) or Granite Silver metallic (237).
M5's could also have the skirting painted the color of the body, or any other color the buyer wanted when going through BMW Individual.

I remember painting a customers car "Flame Red," which is a Chevrolet Camaro color from the late 90's-early 00's I believe. I thought it was nice because it wasn't too orange like many other reds. We recently painted a customers car this funky Porsche red and it looked way too orange to me. Definitely something to watch out for.
Go out to your local dealerships and find a red car who's color you like and then get the paint code from the inside of the door-jamb or wherever it happens to be on that car.

Thanks Angry. I'll check that Flame red out, like you suggested. I saw a lovely red Subaru sporty thing parked nearby the other day. That was a gorgeous colour too, but the owner wasn't nearby or I would have ask him about it......

Calypso rules, OK.
Seriously though, it is always advisable to respray the original colour.

Mugello is the best looking of all reds on an E34. You wanted an opinion!
