Starter whining noise

On the 1992 525i that my son, Sean, drives the starter will make a brief whining noise after it engages. It does this intermittently. Is this a lubrication problem or is something else going on?

mine has intermittently done this with no adverse problems yet, its the starter not disengaging in time. possibly can be helped with disassembly and lube but I have not taken mine out so this is just a best guess.
