'93 540i - I have no idea and the manual shows a reservoir like in my 525i with a fluid level measure, but the 540i doesn't have this and I don't know to what level I need to fill it. Any advice appreciated.

on cars with hydro boost brakes with the engine off pump the brakes about 25 times or till the fluid stops rising, then fill till it's about 1" from the top of the tank, if you over fill the brakes may lock up in traffic.
on cars with vaccum boosted brakes with the engine off fill till it's about 1" from the top of the tank.
no bmw takes power steering fluid, it's ether atf, chf 7.1 or chf 11s, 11s can replace 7.1 but not the other way around, what it wants will be on the top of the tank

yup what Winfred said....I have the same giddy up on my 735iL with LAD. I run Pentosin right to the bottom edge of the screen in the reservoir and never had an issue.

There's also a filter at the bottom of the reservoir, now would be a good time to change it. On the M5, with self leveling, I run the fluid 1/2" above the screen as winfred and George suggest with vaccum boost brakes.
