I just put in a couple new o2 sensors and noticed that one of the flanges between the cat and the resonator is cracked in half, the others flanges and gasket(s) look like they are about to go as well (totally rusted). I'd like to replace them all.
The flange is part #16 http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=HE53&mospid=47410&btnr=18_0222&hg=18&fg=05
... and part #4 http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=HE53&mospid=47410&btnr=18_0210&hg=18&fg=20
Couple questions:
1. Are the ends of the pipes flared, if so how do you put new flanges on, if not how does the flange grip the pipe ?
2. 2 gaskets are listed #17/5, #18/6, one is asbestos the other isn't. Are both needed ? Are there 1 or 2 per side ?
3. Is there enough flex in the pipes that i can replace the flanges without loosening/removing the other ends of each pipe ?
4. Any other gotcha's to watch for ?
