Just like to say, great forum. As you can tell, I am new here. And to the E34 world. I have been a long time E30 guy but this summer I bought an E34 cheap intending to swap the m30 into my '86 e30, but the more I looked over the new addition, the more I liked it. Soooooo, I plated her and now I love her more than the e30's. Anyway, I have a problem with my windshield wipers and washers. Most of the time the wipers work fine but now and then when I start the car, the wipers will start and wipe exactly 4 times. And sometimes when I am driving and press the stalk down for single wipe, they wipe exactly 4 times. Whenever this happens, the washers also go. The big problem is when I pull the stalk back to wash the window, the wipers and washers go non-stop until I shut the car off or I wait until the malfunction relay kicks out. So now I drive around with the wiper pumps disconnected and don't dare touch the washer function. The car is equipped with the headlight and fog light washers and the intense wash functions. I have checked/swapped the wiper switch, all fuses, relays, etc. I have checked the wiring to the GM and RM for opens, shorts, etc. Have check the motor and all 3 pumps. I am starting to suspect the GM. Also, it seems to act up more when it is damp outside. Everything else on the car works normally except the fog lights that were missing when I got the car.
Anybody have any thoughts?
I am desperate as the winter will soon be here and I will need my washers/wipers to function.
Thanks.

First tes, remove the GM, check all pins for proper seating, use contact spray. Disconnect the battery!
Insert the GM, connect battery, that is very important
The GM will re-learn.
in this link is a tech write up on the newer GM

1.
So, I disconnected the battery, removed the GM, looked at all the pins and they look fine. Then I cleaned the pins with contact cleaner. Before I reinstalled the GM, I lifted the junction box from it's location and inspected under for corrosion, pushed out connectors, etc. All looked fine. I reinstall GM with junction box lifted and made sure all connections were made tight, then refasten junction box. I then reconnected the battery. I wait ten or so minutes then start the car and try the wipers/washers. Washers work fine as before but as soon as I try the washers both the washers and wipers come on and won't stop until I shut the car off. It is if I was holding the wiper stalk back non-stop.
Soooo, nothing has changed.
What do you think now?

Also. now that I have disconnected and reconnected the battery, the engine idles horrible and I get a code 1222. Lambda Control #1. The engine used to idle a little rough when cold, but now is really bad. Seems to be very rich and chug. Sounds like I have a great big cam in her. Smooths out a bit when warm.
Any thoughts?

Just an update,
I finally broke down and bought a new general module and my wiper/washer problems are fixed completely.
But on the positive side of this problem, I am a wiper/washer system expert now.HAHA.
On the down side, I have discovered that whenever I disconnect my battery, my car idles like a junk box for a couple days.
Oh well.

Alright, I have been battling w/ similar issue for a year now. Don't have the problem w/ the wipers, but my washers will not shut off once engaged, until I shut the car off. Mine is an '89, so it looks like I don't have a GM? (at least the above link states that use of the GM's started in 1991) Any ideas?
Thanks

Dkarrb, you have an intake leak somewhere, if you dont want to fix it then disconnect the batt and after reconnecting go for a drive, dont let it idle just go. eventually it might re-learn an idle which I have done many times. If it dont then you should at first try to clean the ICV and go from there. Best of luck!
