progress report/pics and more paint questions

well we've had some nice weather it's around 60f/16c and i've managed to slap 2 thin coats on so far. it's kind of fun dodging leaves and such and there is next to no preparation involved so it's super easy... i like the dent it's a testament to the sand/grit trucks.

wondering about a couple of things, i am willing to guess tho...

i only added about 5% thinner to paint, and i'm thinking with that i can do 2 coats today(?) about 6 hours apart...

here it is 2 coats in- i'm overkilling this job i'm going to do 5-6 coats so i can sand fairly liberally.

- when i wash it the water seems to run off the new paint, is it being repelled by the new paint or being absorbed? (ie is it dry?)
this is after 1 coat you can still see the primer.

no choice but to slap another one on i guess :D, the paint's drying nicely at least - too bad i won't be able to blame it on that.

might have to make an appointment with the pros... we'll see...
maybe this can be thread about how not to paint your car.

How come you haven't popped the roundel out while you're painting the hood?

I think it is turning out rather well. Water repels from new paint from the chemicals leeching out. What kind of paint are you using? (not brand but type)

jeff - thanks for the encouragement! i'm not sure what kind of paint... i know some guys at an indie parts store here, they just opened a paint only branch. i asked for a pint of brushable schwarz 086 and (after asking me if i was sure a couple times) was given this for around $50 i think... can you decipher it?

well this is the cool thing about painting this way... no mask, no gloves, outdoors, 2 feet away from my neighbour's car, etc. + i can just close the hood and drive around once it's dried a little. i just have to wash it first each time and be careful to choose a time of day when there are no bugs. i thought about removing the roundel, there is one spot where i get pretty close but i haven't hit it yet! (i keep emergency wipes very close... dropped a bit onto the bumper yesterday!)

... looks like i didn't quite get all of the waxoyl (or whatever they used) overspray off the hood as this spot is giving me grief every coat.

i decided to sand the 4th coat and see where i stand.
and i think i hit a roadblock (i knew i would).

i'm wondering if the hood has been sprayed with clearcoat at some point.

for reference, here it is after 4 coats... the dull bits are the new paint.

white stuff's sanded clear coat. This is why I was asking about the type of paint, some dont like the elders underneath and can play havoc with lifting and stuff. the little dots are called fish eyes here and they sell a tiny bottle of (guess) fish eye remover where you use like 10 drops to a gallon of paint. This stuff will allow you to spray a smooth coat of color directly on oil so it could be a bad thing if you actually have a problem with something on the surface.

i think what appears as fisheyes is actually raindrops (?) or do you mean the spot that i fixed? (maybe fixed...) the actual finish once sanded is really nice, i'm not having any troubles with the paint... couple bubbles from when i tried a retouch too early but those are fixed.

edit- oh maybe i see... i think that is more that it's an incomplete painting/sanding and with the clearcoat there...(?) - i don't think it's going to 'fisheye' but i really haven't the foggiest... we'll see after plan 'b'.

but that clearcoat sure screws plan 'a'. i wanted to buff the new into the old but that's impossible as my test-spot shows. damn it's amazing that a guy i met twice is still managing to piss me off on almost a weekly basis. no wonder the hood looked faded compared to the fenders. i guess i shoulda noticed but this is all a learning experience for me. if it had been basecoat only i'm pretty sure this would have worked... errr... mediocrely at worst.

on to plan 'b'! no, i don't have one... but i'm not taking it to a shop until i'm all out of paint!
