don't really have any questions, but tips are always appreciated...

sanded the [expletive] clearcoat with 800 grade s/p.

Maybe you should have fixed that dent in the leading edge before painting eh ?

Absolutely... don't know why you skipped that. Bondo is quite easy to do.

he can still fix it and redo the paint stuff and it will still look better than before. He did the sanding, after the dent repair he can resand it and then do final 1200 grit and probably buff it by hand for a shine.

plan is 1500 then 2000 then buff is that nuts? that's what i did on the grill... difference is the grill was new.

wait... there's a dent?

j/k ... the dent actually could serve a purpose...

1) draw attention away from the lousy paint job

2) who wants to steal an obviously non-mint 525i?

3) my car wouldn't be the same without it... i kinda actually like it...

that said... if this paint job actually works, fixing that dent (no rust there btw) in the spring will be easier than peeing in the pool, and by then my mistakes will have come through and i can fix those too, and who knows how many gravel trucks i'll get stuck behind this winter...

i'm trying to learn a technique that i can continue over the years, so the dent's no big deal (there were plenty of dents that i did bondo)... the rust was the main thing i wanted to deal with.

i do appreciate the comments guys, honest, any criticism will give me a better idea of where i'm at. i take it that's 2 thumbs down and one undecided... well that's actually very motivating...

If it helps, I'll give you 3 thumbs up for being so gosh darn honest and open for critisism. :D Oh, and I couldn'd do any better. I HATE (and hate is a strong word) body work.

you have three thumbs???? (...thanks, moral support does help). if i wasn't honest about it i wouldn't get jeff's uber helpful pointers.

so... ho... hum... did a test spot as i think i have enough paint left for a retouch or two but not a whole coat and i wanted to see it first. (also i think this could be our last day in 2008 above 14'c) looks like the clearcoat is being a bitch...

1500 is too hard on the fingers after a retouch i think i will try 1200 or 1000 instead and then go over it with 2000, but i'm not optimistic with that clearcoat there...

Q- the stuff in the can isn't the same as the stuff for the stick, they have different consistencies, but it comes out the same in the end.
anyone know what the difference is?

another test spot pic... dunno what that tiny bluey-white patch is, some kind of reflection not a flaw.

white smokey haze in a clear coat is moisture and/or trapped volatiles, especially from painting in too cold of environment. you can use a faster reducer (cheap clean up stuff) but if its real cold you get the results you get. It may clear up after time.

it has been too cold... i think i must have painted too soon after washing the sanded clearcoat... that stuff was really gross btw, sometimes gooey sometimes sticky and it had pieces of crud in it. sucks it's all over the car except the front fenders.

here are some more progress pics... i still have the front edge to do properly (gee can you see the spot?) i think i have just enough paint - it should be easy now so long as we get a couple of warm days in a row. the rest is finished for this year anyway, i think i can shine it some more in the sun maybe... it's a pretty good match actually and the cloudy spots aren't so bad. a coat of road salt ought to hide it well enough... even now it looks better than it looked when i got it (http://www.bimmernut.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=5949&stc=1&d=1221442688).

It takes a brave man to paint a bonnet (hood to you). An even braver man to post pics of the progress. Keep at it!:-)

no mine's made out of flesh, it's why it's so fussy... guess it's time for another meet!

thanks again for the encouragement guys...
there's a couple of guys at work that are going to eat their bonnet when they see this!

here's the latest - the dark black in the first pic is the acid prep... again...

back to square 1, altho it should be easier now...

... unless i try to paint the same 10'c day i prime... i'm glad i decided to do a test spot first!

the white specks are just dried compound... the hazy splotches however are unfortunately in the paint... i'm caring less already... see y'all tomorrow!

harsh but deserved... i don't mind putting out for parts i need but i'm not loaded and the hood i have right now is not worth throwing $300 + at. certainly not right before winter!

it'll be fine for this winter, i'll try it again next summer and put a few coats over the hazy bits... i wasn't expecting to do the whole thing, this job turned into a 'damage control' operation (and remains as such). in fact i wasn't going to do it at all until next year but i had some paint left over and i figured why not (i figured wrong). i'd buy more paint but i'm all out of nice weather... had to chase the sun around the yard yesterday it was only 9'c!

anyway it's fun and i'm learning a lot thanks to jeff. even now the hood looks better than before.... just a few millilitres to go and you can see for yourself...

Not intended to be harsh. I was just poking fun at you.
Like I've stated before you are my hero. Your patience is way beyond mine. If I had patience I'd be a doctor.

Sorry I didn't catch this sooner for you.

Never shoot color over less than a 500-600 grit wet/dry sandpaper if you expect good results finish wise.:(

Always take the time to PDR (paintless dent removal) or bodywork first...even if it has to sit in primer for weeks.;)

Once painted....dents rule the view....promised.

Choose to shoot a 2-step basecoat/clearcoat system...allows you to resand between if dirt/imperfections show up (damn buggers).

If thats all a go.....shoot your clear, allowing for the proper window of cure and then wetsand with a softer 3M hand block with appproximatly 1200-1500# followed by the 2000-2500# and then a cut/compound made for clearcoats using a variable speed buffer ( best results)...then a micro polish compound....with a foam finish pad.

All of a sudden...the rest of your car will look awful given the hoods new shine !

no worries, the rest of my car already looks awful - i can't spray tho... in these winds i don't want to affect my neighbour's current work in progress!
(i think he started too late, i saw snow this morning.. i'm so glad my car is not blue or whatever that is)

http://www.bimmernut.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=6132&stc=1&d=1224698844

last bit i did it was 8'c/46'f cloudy and windy and it still stuck i was blown away. basically i just kept brushing until the paint was gone and now i'm waiting for a sunny day to sand the front and a couple other spots and polish the whole thing properly and see what i am left with. no clearcoat this year, my car is not supposed to have one but it does - i'll decide in the summer what to do about that and also then what to do with the dent i left just to freak tiger out.

variable speed buffer would be my elbow... i like the sounds of the micro polish compound....with a foam finish pad... will do!
Thanks Vinny that's helpful even though i'm not 'shooting'.
