I ended up with a Graf waterpump when I did this job to my other car. It seemed to do its job just fine and never had a problem with it up to the time I sold my car.

You did this job? I wonder if you have a list of everything you ended up replacing you could share... how long did it take? I found a guy on bf.c down in CT who wants to do it for just the labor charge and I supply thr parts..

here's my list so far with a few not strictly related items;

Didn't need new spacers when I did mine.
I did replace all o-rings; all the rubber hoses going to and from the intake; o-rings on the oil separator tube; had the injectors cleaned and flow matched.

If taking out the manifold, do everything underneath it... idle control valve and something else along with waterpump bypass pipe orings. I used Laso waterpump... 7 years no problem.

Spark plug coil boot if you didn't do it... Valve cover gasket if you didn't do it yet. That's a long long long list!

While in there replace the o-rings on the water tubes. Also a good time to scrutinize the fan clutch

I did not do the timing cover gasket when I replaced my water pump, sorry for the misunderstanding. I replaced the water pump at the same time I replaced the intake manifold gaskets and PCV. While I was there I replaced the belts and about a month later, the radiator.

The total time for the job I did was a Saturday and part of Sunday. Make sure when you put the manifold back on that the gaskets seal. It wasn't until after I got everything back together that I discovered one of the gaskets didn't seal and there was an air leak.

On another note, it looks like I will be needing to replace the valve cover gaskets on my 540. Replaced the plugs last weekend and found oil in the two rear plugs. That is a job I can wait to do as I know it is not easy, too much stuff in the way.

Graf is the way to go. I had problems with both a Meyle and a URO. Bad machining in both cases.

Are there any symptoms to diagnose an idle control valve in failure? would my idle being over 500 rpms be a sign?

Don't know how it is with V8's but for my M50 I got a Graf with a metal impeller. I don't like how there impellers are made of sheet metal but it gets the job done. After 2k miles I have slight up and down shaft play, but the pump doesn't make any noise nor does it leak. So in my opinion Graf is good.

When you pull the ICV, if it wont rotate freely when you twist it, it's probably gummed up. Spray ICV cleaner/gumout till it drips clear. Replace the fittings and clamps.

Thanks.I read the fail symptom is rough idle or stalling at idle which I do'nt have at all.. I'll be sure to check it when its out.. think I could use MAF cleaner spray to clean it if its gummy?

I used 2 cans of throttle body cleaner till it finally cleared up. Dont breathe the fumes.

Be absolutely sure... because you will see... it is a pain to redo the intake manifold. How old is yours? If it is original... change it.

I used a good can and a half's worth of carb/choke cleaner to clean an M50 ICV.

You might be able to clean it with MAF cleaner. But carb/choke cleaner is designed for that type of crud. Not to mention carb/choke cleaner is a lot cheaper than MAF cleaner.

I have to assume its original.. do they fail all at once then? Car won't idle? Are they always ammenable to cleaning? How do they fail permenantly if not? I already have near a thousand $'s in parts lined up and expect to pay they shop near that again but if its that important and if they always eventually fail I may as well drop in a new one.

Does some one knows how the idle control valve operate, is the part that rotate controled by a step motor that turn it / rotate it a certain angle or by a motor that turn continuously the moving part but at differents speed ?

The part that rotates (and should rotate freely if it's not dirty & gummed up) has stops and does not rotate a full revolution. So it doesn't spin continuously as it can't. But I've no idea how the mechanics of the valve actually work. But if it had a stepper motor it wouldn't move the valve at all when you wiggle the entire unit back and forth.

they use to suck royal dick, started using them again a few months ago as now they are one of the few that haven't gone to a plastic impeller (including bmw, got in a tight spot and the dealer had a pump for a 01 740i on the shelf and what shows up but a god damn rebuilt pump with a plastic impeller, sent that bitch back, a rebuilt pump will not be installed by me but the plastic wheel was icing), the bearings in them seldom lasted more then a couple years (good bit of them less then a year), checked the failure rate on geba with worldpac and they seem to have gotten better but it still makes my skin crawl installing one with all of the returns we have eaten, sometimes with a good bit of damage to surrounding parts when the fan starts flailing around on the failed pump, e36s take out the radiator maybe 1/3 of the time due to the closeness of the fan when it disintegrates
