Hard Wire Mini USB

Has anyone hard wired a mini USB cable and thus eliminated using the cigarette lighter mini USB cable. I have a GPS unit attached to the windshield and run a mini USB cigarette lighter cable to power it. It would be nice to hard wire it to a source that turned on when the ignition is turned on.

I thought USB was 5v over ground reference.

Probably why no one has 'hardwired' one in.

My suggestion, wire in a lighter socket and keep your adapter intact.

I did something similar with my radar detector - took the lighter plug apart and soldered two cables into its 12v side, then jumped it into the ignition line that goes in the back of the stereo.

Result is a hard wired radar detector that comes on with ignition :)
