Here are some photos of the fusible links in my '89 525i.

My car has an m20 engine and the battery is located in the engine compartment. (and the driver sits on the left)

There is an 80 amp fuse located near the passenger side front shock tower.

It broke when I moved it a tiny bit, all of a sudden the car was completely dead, in the rain at night. Easy fix, though.

There is a 50 amp fuse under the rear seat, near the connector (which can also break).
Mine looked to be in good shape but I replaced it anyway.

There are some good pics of a fusible link in an e32 here (http://www.bimmerboard.com/forums/posts/377728). I believe most e34s have the battery under the rear seat (where my cd changer is), so the location is probably a little different, but it's there, somewhere!

pics from the German E34 forum. Cooments there:

short translation:

for the E34 with battery under the rear seat there are in total 3 different designs of fuse holders:
-one with one In and OUT connection
-one with one IN and a fused OUT connection and a non-fused OUT
-one with one IN , 2 fused OUT connections and one non-fused out connection, this one is shown in the pics.

Woah!

Nice write up. The link in the front, once it is insulated, where does it sit? I've never seen one located on the tower before. Did you pull it up/out form somewhere?

Fusible links are always close to the battery, so in front close to the shock mounts only in case the battery is in the engine bay, otherwise all is under rear seat next to the battery.
