I have the 94 540, has the final revision of the climate control with independant control on drivers / passengers and uses dial type slides for temp and fan control (as used in the next 5 series )

fan is behaving peculiarly at the moment, will some times turn itself up or down when the slide is left at about 1/3

now some times it will not come on above low, even when switched to max for up to 10 min of driving.

has always been fairly ineffective, i can fart harder than the air that comes out the side vents on the doors. i dont think i have a 'pollen' filter and it makes no difference if i am on fresh air or recirc air.
Q? is recirc air drawn through a filter? is there a pre filter that can be cleaned - removed? how do i check for normal / optimal operation

Thanks

I'm confused with your desciption of your controls. the next(E39)series used controls not even remotely similar to the E34.
Your '94 does have the filter, sounds like yours is probably full of dirt. The fan speed issue could be the resistor for the blower or a faulty control.

Your blower issue could be the sword, blower motor , or switch. About the air your a/c filter might be clogged. if your e34 does not have cabin filter you just have to clean your system. bout d fart, dang thats a loud fart:D

resistor pack?

fan sounds erratic for sure, have you changed the microfilter? that will account for the air flow. Mine was completely black when I pulled it.

If you're referring to the automatic-type controls like this (http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=HE62&mospid=47384&btnr=64_0645&hg=64&fg=20), we had them in the USA on some E34 M5s. They're like an E32 7-series, not much like an E39 Five. I don't like them, but no matter. They take the same fan resistor and the same micro-filter. You likely need both.

Yes, he has resistor pack like I do. Same thing over here... fan was weak no matter what... changed out the resistor pack and everything is back to normal.

Resistor pack in a climate contol model? I thought it was transistor pack controlled, aka the sword? (My climate controlled 94 TDS had a sword in it?)

Yeah that's the part that's fitted to my '94 540 without the climate control, just the usual 4 speed fan selector?

Yep.

This is the control unit.

The micro filter, this is the one accessed from the RHS foot-well??

is the 'resistor pack' accessed from the same area?? is it easiest to do both at the same time.

Resistor pack is on driver side... Microfilter is on passenger side.

It all depends on which side of the car the peddals are on..
