my window got stuck open 6 inches today... i had to take it off the window regulator to slide it back up, it is supposed to snow tonight.
i have a spare from my old doors but i can't see a way around taking the whole regulator off, damn those rivets!

this happened to me before on another door and it was the same thing - the plastic cog got all chewed up by the motor. my spare is even older than the one in there. are they all plastic like that? pretty lame....

suxx... the last time this happened was on the ds rear door which is from this car, but this time it is it's on a donor door
- even after i fix it all 4 door windows will be ready to pack it in at any time.
at least i know what size bolts to buy...
i used 1/4 x 1/2 bolts or they would have been too long.

Royal PITA this job, I found. Yeah you'll have to drill the rivets out. Why oh why did they use rivets and not nuts and bolts?!?!

Rivet=$.005 Bolt and nut= more x 1,000,000 = $$$
At least the rivets are soft and can be drilled in two seconds.
Tim,
I want your car when you are finished with it.

Are the internals field replaceable? As in, you can take the plastic cog out and put one back in without removing the motor? It would be interesting to find the cost to make a new cog fabbed out of aluminum if the demand were there.

run a few 1/4" long screws in though the holes in that metal disc into the plastic behind it, that usually does the trick unless the gear is stripped instead of the usual busted drive dogs, if the screws are too long you will lock the gear in place so mind that they don't get into the housing behind the gear

hmmm, i'm pretty sure the plastic cog is totally stripped. i'd bet the motor is still good, the last one was good but the plastic cog was mashed potatoes. i have a replacement ready to go but maybe i should try that anyway to see if it works.
i like patrick's idea about aluminium cogs... hellbeast has eaten 2 in 6 months.
seriously ross, you don't want this thing it would eat your garage.
i thought about putting a manual winder there for safety's sake. (shrug...then i hit the snooze button)

i'm waiting for the new witch i ordered... last post is

You can always count on the weather turning on you at the least opportune moments.

i guess that's misleading - window is functional... just in time to be frozen shut for 4 months. owner is happy :)... saw it coming...

Oh good. I got the impression the window was stuck open. If I can get my hands on an old window regulator motor I'll tear it apart and see what can be done about replaceable and more sturdy cogs. The hardest part I'd imagine is determining the correct values for the teeth, with a close second being able to replace the cog with the motor in the door.

i don't think there is any way that cog is coming out while still attached to the regulator. i can't figure it out as it is on a bench! i think the gear on the backside is just jammed in tight and it needs a good (errr-i just read that sentence and i'm leaving it as is anyway :)) yank ...
still, i would be interested in remf cogs just so i'd only have to do this once.
i was too scared to try my window today it didn't go above -12c...
bmg my friend... forgot to say... i don't know if it bugs anyone else but i wish you'd stop reposting photos, nobody needs to see them twice and it makes threads hard to read... just takes a quick edit, if no one else appreciates it i will at least... thanks bud

If you don't mind telling me where you live that gets -12C I'd appreciate it. I will make a note never to move there and to only visit in the warm season ;)
I agree with you Tim, we need to stop leaving pictures in our quotes. Makes make loading time for those of us on a mobile device a little cumbersome.

shhooot -12'c is nothing, it's only december! that's not taking wind into account either, right now it is -14'c but -21'c with wind chill.
i'm in Montréal, Québec, and i am so very cold, and i couldn't get into my car this morning because a rear door was frozen locked. :(
