View Full Version : Steering idler arm to subframe torque spec?

What's the proper torque spec for the idler arm to subframe bolt? (17mm I believe). I don't see it in either the Haynes or Bentley. Am I blind or does it just not matter?

Always good to be as anal as possible when it comes to steering assemblies...

From the picture it looks like the bolt is M10. In absence of specific torque value mentioned you can use the general torque setting in the BMW torque spec. For M10 grade 8.8 the torque setting is 47 N-m. m12 gr. 8.8 the torque setting is 82 N-m.

Hey there... Sorry I can't ask you a question but thought I might ask you one while I'm here!

I haven't had many encounters with the large centre tie rod (but i've changed the two outer assemblies as the balljoints were toast)... And I seem to have some steering 'issues' so I wondered are they two balljoints on the big rod I see? :)

Yes, one is on steering knuckle and one is on idler arm which is hidden under the alarm siren.

Bentley says : Idler arm to subframe crossmember M10 Bolt 42Nm 32 ft/lb
M12 Bolt 85Nm 63 ft/lb
Centre tie rod to idler arm 37Nm 28ft/lb
Remember Bentley must always be obeyed!!!!

Thanks... Just what I needed to know. I've just ordered one so let's hope when I put it on the steering problems go bye bye's. :D
