So i dont knw if this is how its suppose to be, but...
My sunroof button, has three buttons on it
The front, middle and rear.
To open it i just press the rear button, itll open all the way..
but to close it the front button doesnt work, so i have to hold the middle one to close it, and time it just right so it seals, or else it will just open upwards..
is that normal?
or is my button messed up?

Your button is messed up. Pushing forward should close the sunroof from any position.
EDIT: Surprisingly the button is the same as the manual/economy/sports button found next to auto shifters.

Does it look like this? On these, there's only forwards, backwards and up(tilt).

Infact, BMW still uses this button even in their new 5 series. Nothing like getting it right the first time.

Dont know about 3 buttons but the sunroof and mode switches are the same on mine. There is one central button which you can either push forwards, backwards or in. They dont latch in any position

Yeah, they still use a very similar sunroof button on e39s.
bloodyvsunday, you can get a used one on ebay. There's always plenty there.
Sunroof operation:
Fowards - Close from open or tilt
Push up - Tilt
Backwards - Open

You can usually find one on ebay. I have noticed that if you push the button very quickly forwards that the sunroof will close by itself. It probably says this in the owners manual but I am too lazy to read it :)

I have the EXACT same problem, and I tried a new switch, problem persisted, tried my current switch in friend's car, no problem what so ever, so I am assuming some electrical or connection issues, at least in my situation. I have not dug deeper into this issue yet though... It's pretty much summer from now on out anyway here, and the tilt-closing move works well enough right now... too many other things to fix...
