Evaporator access on pre-microfilter cars

Hello everyone,

My 535i doesn't have a microfilter, but I'm wondering if I can still get to the evaporator. I want to have a look at it and see what condition it is in...and potentially clean it if I can. Is this possible by removing a few things as one would do for the filter change?

Look up the microfilter changing info. I'm pretty sure the early cars have the same access panel just no filter. Or perhaps I've just seen a few too many that are missing one.
I wonder if the airbox is the same one used in E32s and the microfilter area is where the E32 "sword " goes?
Fortunately it's been a long time since I've contorted myself looking around there.
Anyway if the panel is there, remove one torx screw and flip the toggle at the top. With the panel off you can see either the heater core or evaporator. I think it's the evap.

So if the panel is there, the filter can be retrofitted?
