well as some of u may have seen (on bf.c), i went to denver and picked up a 535i to replace the 525i on the 30th of june.

what i forgot to post up is what happened to me on the 28th.

i was driving home from omaha, (about 50 min drive down hwy/i80). as i near the end of the highway and am about to hop onto the interstate. my car gong's at me. as E34 owners, i'm sure you all know how hard my heart started beating and how high i jumped at that sound. praying its just a tail light out, i glanced down. what do i see?

at this point i'm just like "uh.....no way....."

so i put the car in neutral, turn the car off completely. wait about 5 seconds, and start it back up. yep. still says its -535 degrees out.

wondering if this is really happening or if its just a creepy twilight zone thing, i hit the temp button on the OBC to confirm its not just my instrument cluster messing with my head.

and yep.....

after thinking about it on the drive home, and glancing over to see if there would be any changes (and seeing none)...i decided that with all the talk of the trip to get the 535i, my 525i was starting to get upset and decided to express its unhappiness with me. thus the negative 535.

The next morning it read normal temperature. and has ever since...

The temperature sensor is a piece of conductive material with a variable resistance at different temperatures. Depending on its composition, a very cold temperature would lead to a very high resistance, or conversely, something interfering with the sensor, causing high resistance such as a loose connection, would be interpreted by the computer as a very cold temp. Check out the wiring and connection on your temp probe, it is located behind a small hole on your lower front bumper, off to one side (near the fogs)

I think its pretty cool though that it is set at 535

What a strange coincidence though.

When the temp sensor looses connectivity with the obc you will get that reading at the obc. You might have a corroded electrical connection somewhere between the two, but it is quite possibly at the plug on the sensor.

That is awesome. I had an '83 Mustang GT in high school. When I had a girl in the car, and only when I had a girl in the car, ALL of the gauges would periodically go to max - fuel, temp, oil pressure, and charge. I'd normally notice the "high" temp first, aftger skipping a few heartbeats I'd realize that the car was jealous and acting up again.

Only when I quietly muttered that the girl really didn't mean anything to me would the gauges return to normal operation.

But they are just machines. :)

Hah very odd...definitely not completely disconnected as IIRC there's a specific very negative number that the temperature goes to when it's completely disconnected. I wonder if you could re-create this by jiggling the connections around... -535 is quite a random number and actually below absolute zero so to think that the the connection would have to be just loose to the point where 535...that is really a HELL of a coincidence!

I had the same temp reading (-535). I had touched the back of the alternator by accident with a wrench and there was a spark. Disconnected the battery, and when I hooked it back up is when the -535 showed up. Disconnected the battery for 30 min., everything is fine. I guess no more shorting out the juice.......
