Spoke w/ parts rep at local dealer, he says it's the same. Can anyone verify this? Also, my mechanic says that the mileage is saved elsewhere, and if I switch the cluster out, the car will retain the info and the red light will not come on. Is this true?

Yes & no. If both clusters have the blue back, they're interchangeable. To retain your odometer reading, install the coding plug from your old cluster; the mileage is only saved elsewhere starting with the E39. No red light will come on when swapping coding plugs.
Cheers,
David

Thanks! I found one out of 92 525i but the junker wants $200. My mechanic says to hold out for one from his junker for $100/125
