I took the OBC out today to change the bulb as the writing on the OBC was not lighting up to find out that the metal ring that is suppose to be in the housing in the bottom of the OBC was missing so even though there was a working bulb in there...there was no light...

So I have been looking on eBay for a replacement....worth it?!

I actually got both of them from realoem.com

Would I be better off taking mine out and reading the number on the back? I just want to make sure what I buy will be compatible in my car

if I remember correctly all E32 do have a coding plug in the backside of the OBC. (?)
On some E34 models the OBC needs a coding plug in the backside.
It maybe that this is only necessary on the EURO models which partly do not have a check control.

I'm not sure about this, but...

Isnt it something like - all the bosch DME versions 1.x dont support the obc natively and require the plug? M20/M30/M70? (Though I'm not sure about how the E31 does it, the "E36 style" OBC must have some sort of built in coding...)

Anything 2.x or 3.x will support the OBC straight away?

The exception to this is the Diesel models, which always require a coding plug.

Both my M20 and M30 models dont have an OBC coding plug. The M50 525 model that I work on doesn't have one either.

I thought that all low models (518, 520 and the diesels) had to have the code plug for the OBC.

Based on EURO spec cars:

1 ) BC ohne Codierstecker ab 525i Benziner aufwärts = OBC without coding plug 525i gasoline engine and up

2) BC mit Codierstecker für 520i und 525td/s (auch 518i und 524td jedoch nie ab Werk) - bei nicht eingestecktem CS gleiche Funktion wie BC Nr. 1 = OBC with coding plug for 520i and 525td/s (also 518i and td, however never shipped with it ex factory) -in case coding plug is not installed, same function as under 1)

3) Umgebauter BC mit nachgerüsteter Codiersteckerplatine über eingelötete Stiftleiste im inneren = converted OBC with additionally installed coding plug board via soldered in pins inside

4) Eine meiner Varianten eines umgebauten BC mit EEPROM und passendem IC-Halter auf der Rückseite = one of my versions of a converted BC with EEPROM and fitting IC-bracket at the backside
