Just spotted an auto trans for a project I am putting together, but can't seem to search and find a good answer regarding swapping these 2 animals.
It seems like things would be good, but then I see the 735 has some different selector options?

p.s. The auto in the sedan is making a rattling noise at idle and wont drive when warmed up. Yes fluid has been checked.

Ok new trans sourced and in my posession, 1993 535i auto trans. It seems realoem says the 1993 trans is an hp22 hr, and the 1989 is an hp22 ge.
So any ideas?

If the plug is the same, you are probably okay. IIRC The earlier trans's 87 thru 89 won't fit the later models as the computers are different... so check teh connectors. But in these M30 cars, I thought all the trans's were all ZF4HP22EH.

The car is an 89, but the plug seems to be the same round plug as the supposed 93. Is the question the plug shape size or the pinouts?

Both plugs are circular, the 1989 has one more pin than the 1992(3) transmission.
I am questioning bolting this thing up without knowing for sure if its going to work.

You need to have the same amount of pins. Some have 7 pins, some have 8 pins so ideally you should get an autobox with the same pin count.

I swapped valve bodies similar to this individual.

I will put the trans back in tomorrow.

Just finished the swap. No reverse and a trans program error. That being said, she drives great otherwise. It might be the selector adjustment what do you guys think?

Ok trans program error occurs when the car is put in reverse and revved. The orange wire which as I understand it is the reverse lockout solenoid wire when clipped, with the car on stands, and revved will allow the wheels to spin in reverse but ever so slowly, and ever so gradually.
This is the current status and any and all help is appreciated.

Heres a workshop manual on how to rebuild the 4hp22, it has a troubleshooting section which should help,

That manual is a huge help. It is printed and in a binder.
It will help for the next step, the right step, and ultimetly the best step. The rebuilding of the stock hp22a which will be installed after rebuild, and will work perfectly baring now screw ups on my behalf during rebuild.

Thats good to hear, make sure you do the fix they recommend, teflon seals for the stator shaft and modify the valve body. Then you can rev it in P or N all day long.
