I almost forgot, do I need the 96+ data cable in order to use any of the aftermarket IPOD/AUX adapter?

Does the CD43 really a plug and play unit in the 535i 89, a direct C33 replacement without any cabling modification ? I read somewhere long time ago that the CD43 will only fits on E34 after 1991 :
"Will fit vehicles with*standard DIN size slot: BMW E36 3 series 1992-99, 318i, 318t, 323i, 325i, 328i, M3,*Z1, Z3, M Roadster, M*Coupe.*5 series BMW E34 1992-95, 525i, 530i, 535i, 540i, M5. BMW 7 series, BMW*E32 1992-94, BMW 8 series*, BMW E31,BMW *E30 3 series."

Well, when the previous owner had the original harness chopped up to fit an aftermarket headunit...
All I had to do was cut a radio harness and antenna cable(NOT FUN) from a newer BMW and rewire it to my car.

Yes, you need different cable for it to work with AUX/IPOD adapter.
I almost forgot, do I need the 96+ data cable in order to use any of the aftermarket IPOD/AUX adapter?

Newer cable looks like this. There are two connector ends to the trunk. If I'm not mistaken, there is only single connector attached to head unit.
