View Full Version : Brake Master Cylinder Seals

For a while now I have noticed that there is some (see not much) brake fluid seepage around the lines that go into the top of the master cylinder. Although the leaking has not caused a problem as far as brake fluid levels are concerned, I would like to go ahead and fix the problem before it potentially comes back to bite me.

I have read through a couple of threads and found one that suggested replacing the seals rather than the whole master cylinder. While I have no problems replacing the master cylinder I figure if the job can be done on the cheap by just replacing the seals that seems to be the better route.

Now that I have undoubtedly bored all of you, the purpose of this thread is to determine the correct part number for the seals. Looking at this diagram (http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=HE53&mospid=47410&btnr=34_0462&hg=34&fg=25) on RealOEM, it seems to me that number 2 is what I am looking for, even though it says it is a plug. Can anyone confirm this?

You sir, are on the right track!

If memory serves, the other poster who undertook this task provided feedback on how crumbly his 'plugs' were and the difficulty in getting all of the old seal out of the holes.

Public service reminder: brake fluid makes a fine paint remover, don't let your angry ex know that though!;)

Thanks guys, I'll probably replace the seals, brake lines, and bleed the brakes all at the same time. I have no idea when the last time service was done to the brake system beyond me replacing the rears a year or so ago so I am sure service is either past due or should be done anyway.

Thanks and Happy New Years

TBH I wouldnt call those seals. I couldnt find one for the E34 but items 15 and 17 in the diagram here are what I would expect:

Item 2 is correct. They are refer to as the brake master cylinder grommets. I replaced them two years ago on my 95 530. The cost was about $5 for the pair from BMA.

Let me know if you have any luck locating any brake mater cylinder internal parts for out E34. Nothing is available in the US when I tried to locate one for my 540it/6 formerly a 530it. The situation is likely the same in the UK.
