I recently moved from the Los Angeles area to the San Francisco Bay Area and I am looking for a good independent shop to take care of my '89 535i.
Ideally I could find a shop in San Francisco, but I'm willing go outside of the city if the prices are better.
Thanks.

Depending on exactly where in the Bay Area you're in. I've been for years taking my cars to German Motor Specialist in Sunnyvale off of US101. www.bmwspecialist.com
Very reliable and good services. They service only BMW and Mini.

A little out of SF is GS Tuning in Santa Rosa. BMW only guys. They had a lot of E36's in there when I was there, most of them were track cars or track prepped street cars. But they do know a thing or two about E34's as well.
Was happy with them when they put a used tranny in my M-Sport. And yes, I did drive down there from Seattle to have it done...
They seem to know what they are doing and are easy to deal with.

You could bike easily from the Mt. View train station.

Conti Car Care in San Mateo. Percy Ramirez treats each as his own.
