I spent $2500 on my 525i in 2009. Granted, that includes some new automotive tools as well. But, it was pretty shocking once I added everything up....especially since the car still isn't in ideal shape, and I only paid 2900 for it in the first place. The only comforting thought is that, since I only took it to the shop once ($468.7), I probably WOULD have spent $6,000 or $7,000 if I weren't up for the DIY approach.
I keep telling myself: "once I get this part in or that issue solved, I can just drive it and not worry..." I assume many of you can relate.

Yes, I can relate. After considerable work, I've now driven it for two years with nothing but gas and oil. I'm bit anxious for something to go south to give me an excuse to tinker.

Only $2500? Don't fret. Youll have plenty more things to do yet. Remember, BMWs (as well as women) are far more important than money...

I feel your pain! :p In the two years I owned the 535i I spent almost £2500 on parts alone (Kept the invoices too for when it came to selling time!) ... All my ow labour luckily enough bar the clutch which was done by a specialist.
I must say though, the hours of fun I had under that car are countless and I'd do it again. :)

I spent about the same in 09. I spent more in 07 and 08. However, i track every tiny or large BMW related expense including mods, tools and cosmetics like polish.

Think I spent about £150 to get it through the recent MOT on:
New springs all round (two were broken)
Rear discs and pads (the handbrake drums were shot)
2nd hand mid/rear section exhaust (4 years overdue)
Didnt put any oil in it (yes I do check!) or coolant or auto tranny no 3.
I got a new bucket and some clay bar for Xmas. When the 6" or so of snow falls off the car I might even use them :D

Was in work at 0600. Went to Bolton about 0900 and got there about 1030. (Somebody blocked the M62). Unfortunately the firm was closed as the people who live in Bolton couldnt make it to work in Bolton. Got some exercise digging truck out as side roads were not treated. Have a washing machine to fix so may have a lie-in and then do that tomorrow:D

last year was the final year for investing into my car for me. it's sad, but creeping rust means its time to move on and treat it more like transportation. I will of course maintain it and keep it in good mechanical condition, but cosmetics and other small issues are going to start piling up.
i plan on replacing it as a daily driver in march, and then giving it to my gf to replace her car. Should be able to get to at least next winter with it with no major issues, then we'll make another decision as to whether it is a good daily option for her.

Wow.. That's about $2500 a year service expense... about $210 a month
I bought mine in 1999 for $20,000. I think I put in about $6000 since then. It will be 11 years soon... so about $2400 a year. That $200 a month service
Mazda $5000 down and $425/month for 60 months... That's $33,500 total and about $560 a month in service... However, you will own the car in the end... and depending on how long you kept it without major work... will drive that cost down...

You are not alone in the $2K / year club - I as well have been a member this year.
