yesterday started changing roughly at times and also got trans error message.local guy checked fault codes and it showed a problem with the rh rear wheel sensor which they cleared.
they are going to recheck tuesday and if same fault shows they will replace the sensor.They say the sensor could cause the bad changes and the error message.
It feels to me more of a box problem than a sensor issue.Can anyone advise a good auto place to get it checked betweeen syd and the central coast.Saw a couple of posts on a place called Pacific at Waitara but seems their phone disconnected.
Any idea what a box rebuild would be worth or somewhere to pickup a good s/hand or reco box if it turns out this is what i'll need.euro parts has a s/hand one for $1650 with 3 months warranty but seems a lot to spend on something that may not be much better than what i have.
any help appreciated

Yes, the box will react strangely due to the rear sensors faulting. 2 540s I know (inc mine) shudder under WOT and tight lock (accompanied by the EDC light flickering), due to something esoteric, so maybe dirt or faulty sensors cause problems that can be minor OR major.
The boxes are very strong so don't think the worst. A common problem is the temp sensors in the box going bad, an easy fix and one that often **causes** or contributes to failure if left treated. Don't fret, it's probably straight forward.
Change the box as a last option- check the change schedule the existing one has had before doing anything. Change the fluid (w the exact right stuff- check the boxes ID plate for green or black model number print- green means a synthetic fluid, though no matter what one must use the exact right grade) several times in a month first. Get the level right by the book, or ensure that whoever does it can read the trans fluid temp in real time via their diagnsotics gear (it has to be able to talk to a BMW).
BTW: Beware what people might have put in it if it hasn't always been dealer serviced in the past. Do the filter after the second/third change.

mattyb had this problem a while ago. http://www.bimmernut.com/forum/showthread.php?t=23247
I met a guy a few months ago on a e34 cruise in northern victoria he's name is Mike Selke; but he's located in sydney near dural.

I know he's rebulit a few zf-4hp22 gearboxes before, but I'm unsure of the 540 items.he specialises in e34s.

E34 cruise? Never heard of one in Victoria before. Who organised it? Did many people show up? When's the next one? Where can I get more info?

It was my 535, two m5's and the rest were 540iLEs.
I have some videos of winton here;

The track day was in winton on friday and then saturday and sunday driving through the victorian alps.
I think the next one will be in late 2010. There were about 10-12 cars.

Aww I doubt my lowly 525i would keep up with the M5s and 535i/540i's. Ah well, thanks for letting me know anyway!
