View Full Version : Help Identifying a Whine?
If anyone can play this video and give me some idea as to the source of this whine It would help me out.. The noise first appears at around 45 seconds. Its a big file in .MOV file ext.

Sounds like its from the rear end somewhere.
I've ruled out rubbing tires. Others have suggested the Differential Gears or input/output bearings ,CVJ or Center Bearing...
Is there a danger of catastrophic sudden failure were I to drive it before fixing?

Movie never plays
Movie never plays
It is 39.5 MB. Runs a little over one minute and for windows requires Qucktime Player or another which will play .MOV files shot with a digital camera.. thanks for your time though..
I'll try uploading it to Photobucket.
It shows up at around 51 seconds in..

Photobucket link works. You mean the sound like you have a couple of geese locked in the boot? Could be a wheel bearing. Try driving it slowly in an 'S' -like you are warming the tyres up at the start of an F1 race. That should help isolate it

if it was the differential wouldn't it be more of a mechanical clicking, grinding than a whining?
I could be wrong

Yes its an asymetrical whine that sounds to me like small gearing.. its clearly audible by 51 seconds into the video and was not audible for the first two passes.. it did appear after I made a U-Turn to come back past the camera..
What about the Emergency/Hand brake ? There are shoes back there ,correct? I have carelessly driven off more than once for a few feet with the Hand brake engaged could that have cause the shoes to deform and rub? Going to take it to a shop and see what I can detrimine tomorrow..
