How do you check engine/motor mounts on a m30. I know with a chevy V8 you rev the engine and if the mounts are broken the engine will twist and rise. Do you get the same effect with a straight six?

Should do it on your M30. It does it on my M60. Shouldn't make any difference if it's a I6 or a V8. It's the engine torque that does it, not the layout.

They have never been replaced and the odo is at 195,000 miles. They don't look too bad but I guess from what I have read appearances can be deceiving

That method works with an autobox, just apply brake and throttle together. In drive to check L side, reverse for R side. BE CAREFUL as the fan is quite close to the shroud to begin with, have someone else watch for movement.

no need to check it at 195.000 miles, change them both.

Last year we changed on 3 E32 750 the engine mounts, all 3 around 3 years apart, mileages between 60-150 k miles, all were bad. Age, weight for 20 years, dead. These are wear parts and have to be changed, at the same time the center bearing of the drive shaft and the trans mounts, that will give you a much smoother drive feeling.

Look here from someone in Germany, old and new engine mounts from an M30 engine
post #22 shows old and new, the old one is smaller

They don't usually break like on most v8's , they usually just collapse or the internal valving goes bad, sometimes the oil will drain out. They are a hydraulic mount oil filled. Here's a pic of an old one and a new one side by side that i took years ago. Only use the better quality german ones. Corteco comes to mind.

I checked them and they did not move at all. But as you say they need to be changed as with the trans mounts. Center bearing was changed 2 years ago
