So I was looking on eBay and found some wheels that were for a great price...

couple questions I have...

a) Will a 2004 545i wheels bolt on without spacers?

I looked under tirerack.com and noticed that they have 17-20mm offsets...is that too much?

If I am not mistaken the offset on the E34 is about the same?

b) What size do you guys recommend?

The ones I found are 18"...will that be a horrible ride or what?! :(

I was initially looking at 17" but cant find the ones I want.

Thanks for the help! =)

What 17" did you want?

They are the deep dish wheels...I think they are usually seen on the E39 5 series...

its not the M-Pars (even though those would be super nice yet $$$$) its a fine basket weave with a fat lip...

Correcto mundo, offset is 20 for the e34, and for most 5 series for that matter; except for M5 by a small margin, and AWD e34 which is a rare item. E34 M5s do have 18 inch on some, and also Alpina, AC Schnitzer or Dinan moded ones, but can't quite recommend that for a regular e34, the suspension being somewhat different.

Lots of info here: http://www.bmwe34.net/Wiki/tiki-index.php?page=Wheels

Would you say that it would "ruin" my suspension if I get the 18?

Rough Ride?

Overall Horrible ride?

b/c in that case I am not sure if its worth it...

I would think you are talking about Style 42 wheels. BBS also makes a lot of basket weaves, one very popular called style or type 5 in 17 inch. A set usually goes for $1000.

Well, depending on the road conditions in your area and the state of your suspension, you may be in for a rougher ride. I like my 17's a lot, in 235 size, and I find the comfort is not much different from my 15 inch winters.

Often I go here to look at wheels. Got my rims from one user on there. Lots and lots on sale to choose from, but a lot of them for 3 series:

Yes, E60 wheels will fit w/no spacers or hub rings. E39 wheels will fit with no spacers, but need hub rings.

E34 offset is around 20mm depending upon the width of the wheel.

b) What size do you guys recommend?

The ones I found are 18"...will that be a horrible ride or what?! :(

I was initially looking at 17" but cant find the ones I want.

Stick with 17's. 18's will ride much worse than 17's. Rubber for 18's costs a lot more. 18's will be harder on your suspension components. 18's are heavier than 17's as well. For instance M-Pars are forged (which makes it lighter weight than if it was cast), but because they're 18's they're a good bit heavier than something like 17" forged T-Stars.

Stick with a square setup. 235/45/17 on all four corners if you go with 17's. Absolutely no need to go staggered. Not only does it cost more (due to larger rears and losing the ability to rotate your tires for longer life), but it also makes your car understeer more. A square setup will give you a much more neutral handling car with a slight lean towards oversteer. But a 525 with 235/45/17's probably isn't going to oversteer at all if you've got good rubber.

He had the same wheels as I used to have:

http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e97/brighterbuys/My%20Stuff/IMG_2004.jpg

These are e60 style but are replicas:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/18-M5-STYLE-ALLOY-WHEELS-BMW-E34-SEDAN-TYRES_W0QQitemZ110510458120QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_C arParts_Acc_Wheels_tyres_Trims_Car_Rims_ET?hash=it em19baefc508

Personally I don't think they suited the car so I swapped them for 18in mpars, now I have the 17in style 5 fitted which drive much better but I will put the mpars back on when I get new tyres.

Hey! I'm a little behind on this one but as leicesterboy says e60 m5 replica wheels... Looked nice but I always had a thing for the throwing stars myself :D

It did give a better ride quality with the 17" t-stars but the 18's were great for cornering at higher speeds.

I'm on 19's now in the Jag!

Why do you think that iX wheels didn't have ET54 offsets?

http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=HD81&mospid=47377&btnr=36_0054&hg=36&fg=15

E30 & E34 iX's all had very different offsets than regular E30's & E34's. I'd imagine that all of the newer iX's have quite different offsets as well. It's quite easy to make wheels in different offsets. Much easier than making all of the rest of the stuff that's totally different on an iX.

But only if they were in perfect condition and shipping was $50 or so.

Don't believe Breyton does forged wheels And I've not seen one yet that doesn't look ugly IMO. And Breyton is regarded as less desireable than Beyern. And most of those aren't terribly desireable.

Considering the wheel market of late is in the crapper I'd really not even bother with those Breytons. Probably have a hard time making any $ off of them if at all.

Save up your cheese for something nice (Style 32, Style 37, or ACS Type II) or something aggressive (T-Stars). Too bad 37's never came in 17". I'd definitely get a set for winter tires if I could get 37's in 17".

I did come across some 32s for 450 17" in pretty good condition...

the guy would not budge on the price so I turned it down...he wanted me to paint them black cause I have a black car and said that it would look "sick" and worth the 450... =/

If they were in good condition and didn't need painting then that's a decent price. Not great, but certainly not terrible.

Were they from an E39? I'd want those less than 32's from something else due to the hub rings. But I guess people that use the aluminum rings and anti-seize to keep them from sticking to the hub or wheel don't usually have problems.

I keep think I want to get a set of winter wheels. But I'd really want to get forged stars or Type II's. And neither of those is cheap. Might go with 17" 32's if a got a set that didn't need rings and they were really cheap.

not too sure if they are from the E39...I told the guy that I had an E34 with an ET of 20 and he said they will fit...then again he is trying to make a sale...

If you want 5's, then save your $ to get 5's. And keep looking for them all of the time. Might find a set for cheap while you're saving the $ for a "regularly" priced set.

Personally I don't like 5's. Too busy for me. But you could probably guess that seeing that Stars, 37's, and Type II's are my faves.

Why do you think I don't have a set of 37's for my car? I know that my Nurburgring suspension package was designed with forged stars and single pot M brakes. When you go with 37's & floaters it doesn't ride & handle as well as the EDC system is calibrated for the weight of the lighter setup.

I've seen some nice ACS sets go for $800-$1,200. There was a nice set of Type III's that went for $800 recently on BFc. I don't really even like the III's, but I might've gone for them if I'd had the spare $.

Still think you should pick a set of wheels you want and wait until a cheap set comes up or you've got the $ to fork over for them at regular pricing.

Don't care that 5's are period correct or not. I still don't care for them. Don't really see the appeal of them. Still can't believe the vast majority of E34 enthusiasts drool over a set of 2 piece 5's...
