Hello,
When is a lateral diff seal deemed misplaced? Is there any tolerance?
First time, replacing them on the 5 E34. I used a big big socket and a hammer but still the seal went all the way and more through on the left. I said **** it and punched on the right side.
Now right side is nice but left side is 5 hairs (1.5 mm) inside.

I did the same - in fact i trashed my first seal...
I thought they were supposed to be flush but if nothing is hitting (and i dont think it can) it should be fine.
Hopefully someone else will speak up but I am pretty sure one of mine is in further than the other - it has been fine (and if anything, the shaft rides in a different slot - ie not the "worn groove" on the shaft which should help with sealing?)

yeah there is no resistance depth ring or sleeve, just pretty much get them flush and forget it. I tried using silicone to help the seal which caused the stupid thing to go right inside. No glue with the new seals :D
