My Trip Recorder Reset button worked fine, but the Check Control button was dead.
The switch is a bit of a mystery until you realize that the plastic button shaft carries a soft black cylinder (like a pencil eraser with a hole drilled through its axis) and this is conductive. Just rub the gold contacts and the end of the conductive cylinder with a cotton swab dipped in rubbing alcohol. You can pull the cylinder off the shaft and invert it if necessary.
You might as well clean the Trip Recorder Reset switch contacts while you're at it. And renew any dead bulbs.
Now the CC button works properly, even with a light press.
