Installing the sword on a RHD vechile?

I spoke to a mate today who said he had done it before but it seems the steering linkage is in the way. when I removed it it was very tight on the linkage but I manged to get it out somehow by also pushing the brake pedal.

Now I can't put it back in??

Any help guys with RHD cars?

I have an auto and dont have the sword so the 'black box' came out relatively easily. I wouldnt have got the filter in if it hadnt been a two piece because the steering column gets in the way. Sounds like you need an extra pair of hands - or feet - to press the brake and clutch while you jiggle it back in there?

I have an auto also, no microfilter. The steering column seems in the way, its not the brake pedal that I have to worry about.

Interesting my sword comes out on the right side but my steering is on the left. Guess that is one of the benefits of having the steering on the left :)

I cheated a little and ground a small amount off the end of the heat sink so I could just angle it in. The purists wouldntb approve though!

Thanks Erich. I read that before but it doesn't help. I tried for over 30 mins and even got my mum to try to no success :(

At least you don't have a manual. I had to disconnect the clutch pedal and swing it up out of the way, then remove part of the steering column and also press the brake pedal in. Was a horrible job. You can loosen the two mounting bolts for the hvac box so that you move it just a touch and that helps to get the sword back into the hole. Good luck

Thanks Myles. I will try and remove part of the steering column, but I dont like the idea of doing that.

Ha, Interesting though ...it only takes me about 30 seconds to remove and replace my sword :). Don't know of anything else on these Bimmers that causes a conflict with a left side drive...do you ;)

its easy to remove that bit of the steering column. Undoo the colar nut and the two nuts at the other end of the section and jiggle it around until you can get it out. You wont have any problems getting the steering wheel aligned again because you can only have it right or 180deg out.

heh. The right side is never the right side on a BMW. The brakes, the turbo, the sword, the damn microfilter... German engineers have no mercy for the English speakers. Amercians are just lucky they chose to move to the left! It helps them avoid the wrath that Germany keeps wreaking on the Gods of Darkness from the other side of the channel.

Apart from maybe an M5 you would pay more for a Reliant Scimitar than an
E34. Well you would if you really wanted one:D IIRC the Brits won the war on the western front cos we had a lot of help. The germans lost it on the eastern front cos they had the wrong sort of boots and their precision guns froze up. Napoleon made the rest of Europe drive on the right. We told him to fu...er... no we wont. IIRC different parts of Canada, Spain and Austria drove on different sides of the road at the same time. That must have been jolly. Okay I did it, moved the steering wheel forward so the bolts on the coupling were off

then you install the sword while moving the steering shaft out of the way

then push the steering wheel forward and do up the nuts on the steering coupling.

Nice one mate, looks like you could fit a microfilter in there without needing the ulttrarare split version... Hmm.
