Viscous Fan Clutch Failure

When a viscous fan clutch fails is it an all at once condition or is the process a slow degradation of cooling effect? Or can it happen either way?

Mine started failing 2 years ago, and this summer failed completely. Even though, I still believe it can be either way.

Funky thing... can be quick death or long drawn out death cough.
