I have looked on the forum and information on this subject is spotty and dated. Does anyone know how to build a Diagnostic setup for a OBD1 1989 535i e34. The latest I have read on the subject sounds like you guys were launching a space shuttle. :p

You want the right cable for the car- Eg the 20 pin with the built-in ADS interface, rv8flyboy (see the DIS section) on bimmerforums. He sells parts, kits, etc. of his own making, all 'open source'. The SMT pcbs are online so its all in the open thanks to him. Before tat you needed the Fister kit. Most other stuff is for later OBDII cars, e36/46/39 etc. are easily catered for with many software and hardware combination. Your e34, where it has more 'esoteric' issues as come with age, will benefit from connecting to the real software such as the BMWDIS/TIS.
EDIT: You can mail Gert on rv8flyboy(at)gmail.com
