it's from a 1990 "525i" that is for sale.... swapped from a 535i?

Doesnt that say '2.5' on the inlet manifold? I'd say M20B25 for the year but that would be normal. So I'll guess M30B25 out of an E28 on the basis that the oil filler is at the back of the engine

that is the latest and final generation of M30 that was made from 89 to 93.
