Auto Transmission getting hot

I have a 93 520i which has an erratic transmission overheat problem. The Centre Console starts to get Hot and then the Gear stick gets very hot. Any thoughts????

Not enough tranny fluid? How about the tranny fluid cooler lines?

i've had a wprd with a mate who rebuilds auto boxes and he's said that not enough fluid would give totally differant problems. it dosen't occur all the time and i can't get it to happen. No set pattern ie Style of driving or hot weather.
