90 535i says it is in economy mode but feels like sport

Have an odd issue with my 1990 BMW 535i. Right now it says that it is in economy mode but feels like sport mode. When i put it into sport mode it feels exactly the same.

I have not found any other posts on the forums with this issue.

Any thoughts?

clean the switch, maybe some old coffee, coke or so inside. Sometimes it helps to switch the switch about 30-50 times with ignition off, otherwise you have to clean it and open it up

The display changes if i go to Manual or Sport. It also feels different so i think it is changing. So i don't think it is an issue with the switch although given the age of the car it is still probably a good idea to do.
