The arm is the bit from the main pivot to the wiper blade assembly. On an e38 and e39 it is a metal arm and rubber blade. E.g. 7543
Older models have a more complex assembly made up of the rubber and a flexible mechanical blade (conventional design, eg e32, e34 e36).
There are usually 2 types* of each unless they changed the blade types during e39 production or between models (they do with e34 on the latter), but you can always check by search for parts by year and model on most sites (try BMA Auto Parts | Bumper to Bumper since 1978 | Oem auto parts, vw parts, sachs boge, mercedes benz parts, honda auto parts, saab parts (http://www.bmaparts.com) for example, or RealOEM.com Online BMW Parts Catalog (http://www.realoem.com)).
* Most cars have different wiper assemblies for LHD and RHD countries. Try a local BMW wrecker, they are quite commonly found and cheap.
