I just picked up a project car 1992 525ia with blown head gasket. This will be my first head job. I do most of my own work on my e39 & e32. I feel like this is something I can do.
Anyways, is there a good write up about the head job. I have been reading a lot and everyone isnt clear on the tool to lock the cam or not. I know u need to align it at TDC ON CYLINDER 1. Any info will help. Thanks

I think you have seen this before:
Pelican Technical Article: BMW Head Gasket Replacement (http://www.pelicanparts.com/BMW/techarticles/101-Projects-17-Head-Gasket/101-Projects-17-Head-Gasket.htm)
A few pointers:
There are 3 small torx bolts at the front of the head- dont miss one or you will damage the timing chain cover/the head wont come off. The timing chain guide sticks up out of the block - dont break it when removing/refitting the head. Make sure both locating dowels are in the block. If you are taking the cams out to have the head pressure tested/skimmed, read the pelican parts article on cam removal or you risk snapping the cams.

A man walks into a bar and orders 6 bourbons so the bartender serves them and the man knocks back the shot glasses one after the other and the bar tender asks whats the deal and the guy says I just had my first head job so the bartender says that's great I will buy you another one for luck and the guy says no thanks if 6 won't kill the taste nothing will.
