2001 525i - only 1 speaker working

Just bought a 525i auto and I only have music coming out of the rear passenger speaker, sometimes one of the speakers at the front passenger side starts working, but when I turn up the volume it goes out again. Any ideas guys? I had a quick look on different sites and some people with similar problems say it's the amp, but how would I test if it is?

Someone has fiddled with it, probably replaced the unit after installing something else- like an amp or a different radio, for example. The wiring might be shorting, need to check for shorts in the speaker wires.
