Hello everyone I am new to the BMW world, and I have some real fun. 1991 535i fly by wire system (EML) here are the problems.
1. unable to do stomp test (have a CEL on)
2. EML light does not light with key to on (or ever)
3. can start while manually turning throttle body (will idle but does not run well)
4. no throttle response (zero) from accelerator pedal
5. I have a (Burnt insulation) 12-14g green wire going from the DME/ABS/EML electrical box rh fender (It has rubbed through the insulation and contacted the rear valve cover nut) it has 12v with key on.
it splices to another green wire (in the black wire tray that covers the fuel injectors) and runs back inside the vehicle (pretty sure) I have looked in the wiring diagrams but have been unable to determine what this wire does. Any ideas (eml)
Any ideas or suggestions appreciated. (I have read Shoguns site)

Hi, is the car US specification or different? Only US versions have the possibility to do the stomp test.
In case it is US version, try and try, the timing is important for stomping.
EML light does not light with key to on (or ever)
That you have to repair first.

clean the trottling body DK (throttling valve) Motor clean up (http://www.bimmerboard.com/forums/posts/632842/)
1991 wiring diagrams are here http://shark.armchair.mb.ca/~dave/BMW/e34/e34_91.pdf
maybe one of the electrnic wizzards can help you here regarding the burnt wires.

Hello, yes the car is US specific. I really have a hunch that the fried green wire (larger) (that contacted the rear valve cover nut) has something to do with the whole thing.
I have looked and looked at the diagrams I just cant seem to find that green wire and what it does.

As far as stomp test Im thinking that maybe the whole pedal system is dead? There is zero response to the motor while running. I will do some more testing tomorrow.

Scratching my head here. Checked wire harness, no broken wires, pulled apart both computers DME and EML nothing obvious.
Fuses good. Pulled cluster leds for eml seem fine.
1. still no stomp test happening
2. cluster will not run self test
3. No eml light with key to on
4. throttle not moving
any suggestions? is there a way to activate the throttle from the eml computer pinout? Or directly to the throttle pins?
Thanks
Tom

did you repair the cluster EML light as per my above link? That do first. Changing the bulb does not help! You have to solder wires there. See link above.
Or find a spare one.
Did you disassemble the throttle body and clean it as per my above link? That is number 2 in your to do list
Because inside it could look like this one, that I found some years back and of course that will not work
ImageShack® - Online Photo and Video Hosting (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/812/dktake.png/)
and that is almost normal what you find if it has never been cleaned.
Testing data for the throttling valve are on my website under reference data.

1. cleaned throttle (did not look bad)
2. I will check continuity between those points on the cluster
what stops the cluster self test?
Thanks

not all cluster have self test, depends on the backplate color = built year
BMW E32 - 299960 (http://bmwe32.masscom.net/johan/299960/299960.html)
grey one: no self test
white one usually yes, but I have seen also these w/o working self test
blue one = always works

It is the blue one car is a 09-91 BMW 535i
I press right hand button on cluster for 3 seconds turn ignition to on, cluster does not self test, just lights up with normal lights (except eml) lol

1. ran wire and soldered on cluster, eml lights up and stays lit.
2. cleaned throttle (looked good)
3. still no throttle movement.
4. still no stomp test. (bad accelerator potentsiometer?)

DK does buzz when butterfly is gently pushed on.

DK should buzz always when ignition is on even if engine is not running, because then the DK motor should run on stand-by mode. Looks like something wrong with the DK?

I can hear it buzz when i touch the butterfly valve. Is there a test procedure for the DK pinout?

After the rewire to the eml leds on the cluster, eml lights come on and of course stay on.
1. cleaned DK (looks great) can hear it buzz while gently giving butterfly valve backfeed with finger.
2. still no throttle operation.
3. it will not start without someone outside physically operating the dk.
any ideas?

I only have the data for testing for the M70 throttle bodies DATA - SYSTEMS (http://twrite.org/shogunnew/data/controlsystems.html)
see DK input details, small PDF file

Test your accelerator pedal and make sure it is working...
