What model and built year do you have?
As the 518, 520 does not have Check Control in the Instrument Cluster, the OBC requires a Coding Plug into the back of it.
Others do not need this, as they have a check control.

That is the MF multi function clock you have. Basically it can be done to change to the BC IV board computer. Here is a 56 page instruction in German language, maybe you understand a bit German or translate important things, but the pics will do

wait, I just found English instructions

I've done it on an ex-Japan M50 powered 1990 525i auto.

You need the radio/OBC and heater control surround/cowl along with the OBC unit. Your car already has the necessary wiring and sensor for reporting outside temperature and the OBC will simply plug in and work and display via the cluster's display too. However it must be from a car with the same type of engine else your engine stats will be incorrect.

Also, to do it right you need the indicator stalk from any 535 or OBC equipped e34 so you can scroll through the functions without taking your eyes off the road. I didn't bother with this myself but it is useful when you are driving long distance.

Let us know how u go!

You don't necessarily need the surround / cowl of the heater vents. I didn't bother to do this, I just cut a hole at the back so that the longer OBC can fit. It's not the prettiest thing, but you can't tell from the front anyway.

Did the same thing myself, got a computer from the states for very little money and cut the back out toi fit the new unit. It all works well and I love the code button for extra security when I park in a less secure place.
