Fitting a new Power Steering Pump - 540i E34 M60

A quick question to all "those in the know", when I fit my new (expensive) power steering pump, is it necessary to pre-prime it before re-fitting it and what is the recommended power steering fluid? I forgot to check the filler cap before I masked up the car for spray painting, Doh, Doh, Doh!!!!nonono
