View Full Version : Rear wheel wobble

Check this video, just uploaded it is this a bearing or what? We didn't hear any noise before but only had 1st gear so the ride was limited.

This a wheel bearing? Too dark to check it out but will tomorrow. Never saw anything this loose.

This is on the 96 328i (E36), we know no details about this car but just replaced the trans with a non burnt smelling one.

Well that was ugly! Seems the bearing locked up on the inside long ago and was replaced. The flange is worn where the inner bearing goes. So they replaced the bearing and re-used the flange and it failed again. The shaft is hammered so bad the threads are wasted from stripping the nut so they hammered the nut so it wouldn't unscrew... was NOT tight either. So need a shaft, bearing, flange and nut to get it together.

Probably had a big spacer, messed the bearing...

Doubt the car had spacers, lowered quite a bit.

Note the threads on the end of the shaft.
I wish the car came with videos showing the hacks working on this thing.

The hub is .018" smaller where it is worn, almost looks machined.

Yes, needs the shaft, a hub, bearing and new nut to put back together. Then we will see what else it might need.

Popped it all back together a couple days ago. Cleaned everything up nicely and lubed with gear lube for the install process. Besides the E-brake all that I used was a bolt from the gear puller and washers... and various shims from bearing shells of days gone by. Everything went together with about 1/4th the pressure I imagined it would take. Even the new (used) half shaft slid in all the way with a tap. I guess as long as everything don't spin on itself it should be good to go. Now the ball is in my sons court, sway bar and rear muffler half and we can go on a proper test drive after I try to reset the trans light.
