No, it does not :), presuming you are in gas (not diesel) there are 7 different engines for the 1989 E34

In the USA, probably only 2 (Officially), M20B25 and M30B35

My mechanic says it's a diagram with timing for single vanos twin cam 6 cylinder engine.

I don't think there was a VANOS in 1989, VANOS was first introduced in 1992 on the BMW M50 engine used in 3 and 5 Series. By 1989 the engine was an M20 for the 525 as posted by Shogun. If you have a Single VANOS engine, then something weird happened to your 1989 525i and engine should be properly identified before going on.

The info in the links Shogun gave you, is top quality info. Fear you are not very skilled in engine mechanics, thus your struggle. Guess your best way is to hand to your mechanic this link https://www.bmwtechinfo.com/repair/main/741en/index.htm and he should be able to find his way to the engine you have in your car (This is the BMW manual and includes all engines). If he can not, guess you should change your mechanic.

A good alternative, that would enrich your chances to get the best owning an E34, is to get an E34 Bentley Manual (you can even download it in the web). It also includes detailed instructions to adjust the timing belt/chain on different BMW engines.

Of course that would help, then we can exactly find out when the car was built with month and year, the exact engine type, which options the came came with and which country specification it is. Just let us know the chassis number = VIN and we can get the details for you.

Not if the engine was changed. I wonder how they got the vanos to work, computer/harness swap?
