Easiest to install is the same engine, no changes necessary, just think about ECU, engine wiring loom, transmission, driveshaft length/size, cooling system etc.

Uhm, Shogun, he's looking for oil, not an engine ;)

I have the same M50 non-vanos and have been using a full-synthetic Mobil1 0-40 or similar weight synthetic castrol for many years. vehicle is only driven in summer months, oil get changed once per year.

Oh, try a search, you'll find more than enough opinion on the subject.

Sorry, I thought he wants to change the engine, misunderstanding, should have read more carefully.

My old handbook says 10w40 is recommended for outside temperature of -20 to +30C.

If my search result is correct, your outside temp is +20 to +30C all year round.
So you could even go with 15W40. That is good for -10 to +40C.

Currently use a 10w40 high milage oil and change once a year in my 95 with M50 engine. Only drive it about 1300 miles a year.

Yes, no problem, I live in Japan and in summer season with hot climate it is between 25 up to 35 degree Celsius and my E36 M3 uses Mobil 10W 40. Mobil I use because I can get it cheap here from Costco, actually I have no preference. Regular change and a filter change are more important.

M30, M50, M60 all specified 20W/50. We get a lot of hot weather here, nothing much below zero.

I use HPR30 10W/60 Penrite synthetic (http://www.penriteoil.com.au/products-categs.php?id_categ=1&id_brand=1) in all my e34s as it is high zinc content and lasts well. The e46 M54 gets HPR5 10W/40, maybe I should be using lighter versions such as HPR0 0W/30- but once I tried 10W/40 in the M50 and the valve-train was very noisy on hot days.

My water pump failed and I overheated with head damaged.
I shaved and pressure tested the head the head.
And overheating continues.
Any advice here.
