I have a 1990 535i 5-speed with 73,000 miles. I bought the car in January 03 with 53,000 miles and just realized after reviewing some receipts from the previous owner that he was using synthetic oil. Since I bought the car I have been using conventional Castrol GTX 10w30 in the fall/winter and 20w50 during the spring/summer. I want to start using Mobil 1 synthetic but I am unsure as to what weight oil to use. I live in northeast PA where tha average temp in the summer is between 80 and 90 degrees F. In the winter it is usually in the mid 30s. Can someone let me know if I am using the right weight oil and if I'm not, what I should be using throghout the year?
Thanks

Or to put it another way, you can get as many different responses to this question as you might with an open-ended question about politics or religion. There is more than one right answer, etc.
But Bill R. is one fellow whose advice you can usually heed and sleep easy. Guarantee he has done the research, probably in a few ways.
Sounds like you have a sweet car.
Cheers.

i use the 0w40 when i can afford it, used to use the 5w30 because it is cheaper if you get it in the jug from wal mart. there's also the new m1 5w40 if you aren't comfortable using the 0.

what the quick skinny about the "0" in the 0w40 shoot... whats the 40 about as well :-)

the 0 means that it will pump itself into your engine faster than 5 or 10 at colder temperatures because its thinner. the 40 means that at your usual operating temps, its 40 wt. if you're going to use a mobil 1 product, the people over at bobistheoilguy feel that the mobil 1 5w30 is an inferior product compared to the 10w30 and 0w40, so if you're looking to pick up a discount jug, you'd be best off getting the 10w30, as the 40 isn't available in jug form yet. they like the 0w40, but seem to think that the m1 5w40 is the best constructed mobil 1 formulation. this oil just made it to walmart, and is referred to as Mobil 1 truck and suv (not by the oil grade). it is also available in commercial trucking type circles under the name Delvac 1.

Just a joke Mr. Mayor!
Anyway, here's another explanation page (http://www.performanceoiltechnology.com/which30weightoildoiuse.htm) that may help you.
Good Luck.

M1 5w-30 & 10w-30 are to thin to use in the 525 engine in warm weather. As others have suggested use the M1 0w-40 or 5w-40 SUV oil for year around use.
