Both remotes on my 1995 BMW 525i quit working. this is the 3 button clicker. I checked fuses. all seemed ok, replaced remote batteries, realigned under seat antenna. Nothing. Searched and did not find anything except replace batteries.

I suspect black box under rear seat. However, I cannot find it in REALOEM so not sure if I can find a used one or new one.

Help needed on where to go next. Thanks.

I do not know the US system in detail, might be this
http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/showparts?id=HD63-USA-01-1995-E34-BMW-525i&diagId=65_1000
but the next page shows the IF remote control the socalled switchblade http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/showparts?id=HD63-USA-01-1995-E34-BMW-525i&diagId=65_1028
In this case the control unit would be from Siemens as shown here, but that is a EURO car shown http://bmwe32.masscom.net/johan/remote_locking/remote_locking.html

Reprogrammed one key chip and the remote worked! Checked the other key remote and it worked without reprograming. Have no idea why. I can only think I somehow reset the "brain" box. The serial number on the box 82-111467028 I cleaned connection with Detoxit and buttoned everything up. Hope it stays working for awhile.

Sounds like you have the 3 button fob separate from the key. You take the chip out of the fob and put it in the black box to sync the two? I believe the part number is 82111467756 but realoem doesn't recognise that number.

FWIW, I think that is a N America only item. While it doesn't show the maker on the box, yours will probably have the FCC code on it. If it starts with A26, that identifies it as being made by Alpine: https://fccid.io/A269ZUA070

FCC is the American body which controls radio signals. You may not have heard of them unless you were into amateur radio and had to do the tech/operation exams :-)

End of superfluous information post

Sorta fixed. On a short trip today the remote would not work. However, later it did work. I suspect a bad connection somewhere. Ony one ever open one of a security boxes up?

Usually the buttons in the fob or key fail, the contact pads inside wear out. But intermittent failure is also the sign of a low battery in the fob. Sometimes they just need a clean due to years of humidity, poultice or fluid ingres.

Could try soaking it in alcohol like the window switches. Not sure how well that would work though. Since I have never owned one can the FOB be taken apart?

Sounds easy enough!
